Chlorophytum | Spider Plant
The Spider Plant is a classic, easy-care houseplant known for its arching green or variegated leaves and its playful baby “spiderettes” that dangle from long stems. Its soft shape and fresh tones bring brightness and movement to any interior.
This plant grows into a lush, arching clump and can reach 30 to 60 cm in height and width indoors. Over time, it produces long stems with baby plants that you can leave trailing or propagate easily.
How To Care For Your Spider Plant
Light
Place your Spider Plant in bright, indirect light. It also adapts well to medium light, making it perfect for rooms that don’t get full sun. Avoid harsh direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaf tips.
Watering
Keep the soil lightly moist but not wet. Water when the top few centimetres feel dry. Spider Plants are forgiving but prefer consistent moisture. If the leaf tips brown, check for over-watering, under-watering, or extremely hard water.
Soil
Use a well-draining indoor potting mix. Adding a little perlite improves airflow around the roots and keeps the soil from becoming too compact.
Humidity and Temperature
Spider Plants enjoy normal household humidity and do well in temperatures between 16 and 27 degrees. Keep them away from strong draughts or heating vents, which may dry out the leaf tips.
Feeding
Feed every 4 to 6 weeks during spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertiliser at half strength. Avoid over-fertilising, as it can cause browning on the leaves. Pause feeding during winter.
